Capitalization

1.  Capitalize proper nouns:

names, cities, states, months, days of the week, holidays.  You might think of this as capitalizing brand names but not generic terms.

Examples: I went to the football game at McKinley Junior High School.
I graduated from junior high school in 1965.

Note: Capitalize school subjects only if they are the names of languages.  Capitalize the names of specific courses.

Examples: Jan took speech, French and tennis last term.
This semester she has Small Group Communication 252.

2.  Do not type or write in all caps or capitalize randomly.

Random capitals are disorienting and hard to read.  Because capitalization is part of punctuation, readers must be able to distinguish between capital and small letters.  If you must write in all caps, make your capital letters bigger.
