Creative nonfiction is a genre I adore, whether reading it, writing it, or talking about it. It is contemporary and relevant, capturing the truth of experience in unexpected ways. The mix of researched fact, vivid detail, and reflection creates a genre that comes alive on the page.
Creative nonfiction draws on the techniques of different genres. It uses fictional techniques like characterization and plot; poetic techniques like sonic strength, image, and metaphor; dramatic techniques like scene and dialogue; expository techniques like fact, statistic, and scientific detail, and embeds them within a larger story. Creative nonfiction even employs philosophical and aesthetics techniques such as reflection on the greater meaning of personal experience.
